Since March 2011 17 Tibetans (mostly young monks) have set themselves on fire in the Tibetan region of Ngaba. As they are on fire they are calling for the return of His Holiness The Dalai Lama to Tibet. They either die immediately or the Chinese police douse out the flames and then beat them.  Some of these young people have died and others whereabouts are unknown.

The Ngaba region is home to the very important Kirti monastery. This monastery has recently had 4 Chinese security offices built in to their premises. Monks are being sent away for ‘re-education’. In response to the repression of Tibetans cultural and spiritual freedom the Tibetans are turning towards drastic actions to try to break through the silence.

A Sakya Trinley Ling spokesperson said: ‘Many people in the Blue Mountains care deeply about H.H. The Dalai Lama and Tibet, many people realise the beauty and the importance of the culture and the people. And we are completely committed and dedicated to do ANYTHING we can do to see the situation within Tibet improve. We will not turn away from the Tibetan’s plight at this time.’

HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA HAS ASKED FOR OUR HELP AT THIS CRITICAL TIME.

Since March 2008 crackdowns have occurred by Chinese military across Tibet because of peaceful protests by the Tibetans asking for religious and cultural freedom and the return of His Holiness The Dalai Lama to Tibet.

Monks are being sent away for ‘Re-Education’. The monasteries and townships are heavily policed, religious freedom is not allowed, and violence and fear is at an extreme level. Due to this appalling situation, monks are setting themselves on fire as a form of protest. The last two months have seen six monks, aged 17-20 years, set themselves on fire out of desperation at the repression the Tibetans are suffering under Chinese rule. Please join us to express your concern at Chinese human rights abuses in Tibet, show solidarity to Tibetans, and join a global campaign to increase awareness of what is happening in Tibet.

‘We express our solidarity with all those who lost their lives and with all other Tibetans who are incarcerated for their courage to speak up for the rights of the Tibetan people. We appeal to the United Nations, freedom-loving countries and people around the world to show their support and solidarity with the Tibetan people at this critical stage.’

On Wednesday night, October 19th seventy Blue Mountains residents, including Tibetan monks, conducted a Candle Light Vigil at the Carrington Hotel Garden. October 19th was a Global Day of Action for Tibet, orchestrated by the Tibetan Government in Exile. Vigils were held all around the world on this day from India to Europe to Australia.
In this very moving and special event the Blue Mountains community spelt out the word ‘Save Tibetan Lives’ in candles and said prayers. The Blue Mountains community expressed their sorrow at the situation within Tibet, pledged their solidarity with Tibetans and made an ongoing commitment to work on their behalf.
This Candle Light Vigil is in response to the deteriorating situation within Tibet, and the lack of international media coverage.
